Scams Increasingly Target Young Recruits

Young, inexperienced and often drawing their first paychecks, enlisted men and women are easy marks for sleazy car dealers, insurance scams, predatory lenders, and identity theft. So pervasive are the rip-offs—and so troubling the debt incurred by military personnel as a result—that U.S. Department of Defense officials recently labeled the situation a threat to national security.

The Better Business Bureau Foundation of Hawaii (BBBF) funds Hawaii’s BBB Military Line, consumer education and charity review programs, which are provided as a community service at no cost to the public. BBBF is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization. The primary support for BBBF activities comes from local BBB Accredited Businesses that voluntarily donate 10% of their accreditation renewal fees.
