Hawaii's 2009 BBB Torch Awards

Each year, the BBB Torch Awards program helps illuminate the importance of an ethical marketplace where buyers and sellers, and donors and charities can trust each other. BBB’s Torch Awards program promotes trust in the marketplace and recognizes local businesses and public charities for their outstanding commitment to fair, honest, and ethical marketplace practices.

BBB Torch Awards are open to all Hawaii businesses and 501(c)(3) public charities. BBB accreditation is not required, however those nominated must be in good standing with Hawaii’s BBB.

On April 29, 2009, the BBB Torch Awards Luncheon honored those reflecting BBB’s mission to advance marketplace trust. Awards were presented as follows:

In their Poipu, Kauai condo, they realized the need for quality windows and doors that would stand up to the environment of the Islands. The BBB Ka Mea O Kāko‘o Award is presented to an individual who has significantly advanced marketplace trust through demonstrated commitment to consumer advocacy, protection or education.

As director of the Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA), Mark Recktenwald increased public education and access to department services. DCCA developed public awareness campaigns about state consumer protection laws, and online services for business licenses, registration and complaints. Recktenwald successfully lobbied for new state laws on security breaches, Social Security number protection, freezing credit reports, and disposal of documents with confidential and personal information. He also affected changes in how DCCA processed and prosecuted violations of the state’s medical licensing laws.
