BBB Secure Your ID Day is a public education and community service event aimed at preventing identity theft. On Saturday, Oct. 23, BBBs across North America will host BBB Secure Your ID Day, including events on Oahu. Everyone is invited to take advantage of free on-site document, CD and floppy disk destruction, cell phone recycling, and practical tips to avoid identity theft.
Among BBBs participating in the October 2009 BBB Secure Your ID Day, Hawaii’s BBB had both the third most traffic and volume of shredding with 638 vehicles delivering 12.7 tons of material to be destroyed! Individuals and small businesses are encouraged to take a key step in identity protection by shredding and properly disposing of sensitive paper documents, CDs and floppy disks, and unused cell phones at this year’s event.
Access Information Management will accept up to three boxes or bags of paper, CDs and floppy disks that contain information you don’t want in the hands of identity thieves. Paper documents should be removed from binders, but staples and paper clips can be shredded.
This year, BBB Secure Your ID Day includes free, safe and secure cell phone recycling courtesy of The Wireless Alliance. The cell phones collected will be refurbished, reused or smelted down for metals and plastics. The Wireless Alliance removes all user content from the phones turned in, but consumers are welcome to remove their own data prior to disposal.
Hawaii’s BBB staff and Bank of Hawaii volunteers will also be on-site to provide advice and tips for identity theft protection.
